VH1 Storytellers Classics

VH1 Storytellers Classics Decent collection – Steven D. Miller – Sebastopol, CA USA
Nothing to write home about, but a nice set of performances from the Storytellers series, with a few good moments. For the price (and potential length) of a VHS tape, this could’ve been a lot longer (it’s only about 40 minutes).
: Recommended more for quality of live performance than for storytelling, VH1 Storytellers: Classics is a seven-song compilation from the popular VH1 series, bearing all the strengths and weaknesses inherent in the program. Some of the featured musicians are fine raconteurs, and the format of the show encourages them to share the genesis of their best-known songs. Pete Townshend explains that the title of “Baba O’Riley” was a combination of two people who inspired him when he wrote the song: Indian spiritual teacher Meher Baba and electronic musician Terry Riley (he added the “O’” for a touch of Irish flavor). David Bowie explains how “China Girl” arose from a collaboration with Iggy Pop after a moving experience in a Berlin punk club; and before launching into an outstanding performance, Steely Dan’s Donald Fagen describes “Kid Charlemagne” as an allusion to the passing of the 1960s.

Other performers have little or nothing to say about the songs they perform (when asked, Rod Stewart shamefully can’t recall who originally played mandolin on “Maggie May”), but virtually all of these performances are first-rate and fully deserving of their inclusion. Surprisingly–or perhaps not–Ringo Starr provides the highlight, recalling how his melancholy feeling of exclusion during the recording of the Beatles’ White Album led him to take a holiday in Sardinia. It was there that he was inspired to write “Octopus’s Garden,” and his performance of that song–with his hand-picked band the All- Stars–is as purely delightful as the original recording. –Jeff Shannon

IT’S ZILLA!!!! – I, Da Ca$hman – Colorado
For all my reviews visit my website

I am NOT reviewing the DVD. Just the movies unless otherwise stated.

Please note that the rating above might not accurately reflect my thoughts, you will see a rating sentence at the end of the review.

Roger Corman. Must I say more? Well, in this case, yes, I must. Now, this movie tries extremely hard to create a great monster movie, it was just squashed from the beginning. The shots are beautiful, the characters are written to a familiar stand-point, the monster is awesome. The directing and scriptwriting is great, it was the acting and editing that sort of flushed the movie down. Of course, the CGI is bad. But, don’t we all love that? And of course, we have DinoCroc named Zilla!!! Okay, not really, but he looks a ton like it. Really, the acting. It’s like these guys are TRYING to be stereotypical. It’s like they’re TRYING to be stupid. I swear, there was a conspiracy.

And, I said the scriptwriting was great? Well, the points in the script were great, but as overall, THAT WAS THE MOST PLOT HOLES I’VE EVER SEEN IN MY ENTIRE LIFE!!!!!!!! It’s like half the script got burnt, much like DK was created when MK gone $#!Tless.

There’s not much left, honestly. The only thing I can say, is that it’s pure today’s monster movie. Check it.

I rate it, 2.89/5
DinoCroc: : Imagine all the fury of a prehistoric carnivore combined with the ferocity of the largest crocodile known to man and you have the makings of nonstop terror. Run for your life as Gereco Corporation’s experiment to manipulate a rapid-growth hormone gets out of control, and a ravenous monster gets out of its cage. Now the residents of the once-peaceful Grant’s Lake have only the talents of a crude Australian reptile hunter, the short-handed local sheriff, his daughter the animal control expert, and her boyfriend, to save them from the insatiable jaws of a beastly feeding frenzy

Big Bad Mama [VHS]

August 9th, 2010 by pseudolobster

Good Trash – Matthew V. Clemens –
Angie Dickinson is gorgeous, William Shatner and Tom Skerritt are cool. The story is better than you might expect in a B-movie, and there’s plenty of sex and violence. What more could you ask?
Big Bad Mama [VHS]: : Angie Dickinson stars as a bank-robbing matriarch in this 1974 Roger Corman production, often described as a knock-off of Bonnie and Clyde. (As if that makes any difference regarding the worth of the film–which is pretty good.) Set in Great Depression-era Texas, the story finds Dickinson’s desirable and poor character driven to crime, along with her two daughters (Susan Sennett, Robbie Lee), all of whom use sex to distract or drive men into culpability. The film, directed by Steve Carver, is pure Corman formula: fast-moving, violent, gritty, adorned with nudity, and yet solidly true to its own sense of high drama and texture. Veteran Angie Dickinson brings solid acting chops (and a great bod on display) to the enterprise–and speaking of Enterprise, William Shatner is quite memorable (as is Tom Skerritt) as one of the gentlemen who fall under the antiheroine’s sway. –Tom Keogh

The Tudors: The Final Season

August 2nd, 2010 by pseudolobster

The Tudors: The Final Season Wonderful ending to a wonderful series – Katie Muyer –
This season was very exciting with all the same political squabbling that I love. They also go to war, so we got to see some good action scenes. The acting has been phenomenal and the finale really brought out the best. I am sad the series is over, but will certainly watch it again in the future.
: The Tudors presents the rarely dramatized, tumultuous early years of King Henry VIII’s nearly 40 year, omnipotent reign (1509-1547). In addition to his famous female consorts and 20+ year marriage to Catherine of Aragon to the infamous dalliance with Anne Boleyn, the series delves in to Henry’s most notable political relationship and the deconstruction of the Roman Catholic Church in England.

Emily Green Dot Dog Tumbler

Mealtime fun for truck-lovers! – H. Heath – Atlanta, GA
My 20-month old son loves trucks and loved eating anything he could from his Emily Green Dump It Bowl. So, we ordered the plate and cup as well. The plate is a little large for his small portions (it is a normal dinner plate size), but he gets excited when he sees the plate come down from the cupboard. In any case, he’ll grow into it. The cup is a great size for his hands and allows him to practice his still-new cup skills. I love that all of these are sturdy and very easy to clean.
